Sunday 25th March 10am-5pm Tickets £30 available from Maria McKenzie on 07812 249913 or mlm@shrewsbury.org.uk On 17th / 18th February 2018 – In association with The Manchester College Jazz Department, JazzSmart hosts a two day saxophone workshop, that is aimed equally at classical and jazz saxophonists, led by Andy Scott, assisted by James Rawlinson & Andrew Blee. Building & developing ideas from the inaugural course at Manchester College in February 2017, Andy will use his vast experience of planning and directing saxophone workshops to strike a balance between using written material, using our ears, and embracing a musically open-minded philosophy. Time will be spent rehearsing as; one large group and smaller groups, with a great rhythm section joining us on the Sunday afternoon. Options will be available in sessions 2 & 3 on the Saturday; Andy will lead a masterclass that is aimed at more classical saxophonists, you are welcome to prepare a solo piece or a quartet may play, whilst those more interested in improvisation may work with James (intermediate/advanced) & Andrew (beginner). “James is a fantastic musician; a wonderful performer and teacher! His knowledge of improvisation and jazz, coupled with his teaching experience, means that we may offer you options throughout the weekend. Andrew studied with James & then went on to complete a degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Chichester. On September 24th 2017, American trumpet soloist Rex Richardson will be giving the Japanese premiere of Andy Scott’s ‘Freedom of Movement’, performing with the Symphonic Winds Tokyo in Shibuya, Tokyo The concerto was written for Rex last year and the title 'Freedom of Movement' refers to a freedom of musical expression and versatility that the soloist is given within this continuous 15-minute work. “Andy Scott’s ‘Freedom of Movement’ Trumpet Concerto […] displayed its American roots; its groovy melodic hooks and jazz improvisations fused in a virtuosic performance by Rex Richardson.” To celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Saxophony (a sax ensemble based in Winchester) Andy will be taking part in a Saxophone and Flute recital together with Clare Southworth (Flute), Ian Clarke (Flute) and Rob Buckland (Saxophone) on Saturday 23rd September.
There will be a Flute day on Saturday hosted by Clare and Ian and a Saxophone Day with Rob and Andy on Sunday 24th. Momento is a six minute work that pays homage to Monk, Ella and Dizzy, three jazz legends who share 1917 as their year of birth. The world premiere takes place on Monday 4th September 2017, 20:30 in Drescher Kellen, Kaltern, Italy, and will be performed by the combined forces of the South Tyrol & British Clarinet Ensembles. The UK premiere by the British Clarinet Ensemble will take place on Saturday 21st October 2017 in Oakham School Chapel. More details to follow…
Andy will be returning to JazzSmart to host a 3-day Saxophone Ensemble workshop over the weekend of 4th-6th August 2017 in Barton-on-Sea (near Bournemouth).
