Blue Phantom

duration 4:00

Blue Phantom opens with a reflective solo for flugelhorn before moving into a 3/2 samba. Groovy and catchy melodies and riffs ensure that this is a piece that both performers and audiences enjoy! A notated solo for trombone may be improvised if preferred, and the return of the opening flugelhorn melody to conclude the piece, this time over a groove, lends itself to additional singing and choreography.
Andy Scott was commissioned to write Blue Phantom for Lions Youth Brass Band, directed by Nigel Birch, for world premiere at the European Brass Band Championships (Youth Section) in Montreux, Switzerland, on Sunday 28th April 2019. In the 1970 World Cup the England goalkeeper Gordon Banks made an incredible save from the Brazilian superstar Pele, who described the moment as Banks flew across his goal as like seeing a ‘blue phantom’. The title seems especially appropriate given both the style of music (originating from Brazil) and the fact that Lions Youth Band are based in Sandbach, the nearest big town being Stoke, where Banks was a legend for Stoke City FC, and where he sadly passed away in early 2019.

Love Music Trust (the music hub for Cheshire East) in conjunction with Foden’s Brass Band and members of Love Music Trust Academy, Poynton, Macclesfield, Lions and Foden’s Youth Brass Bands, with students from Haslington Primary School, gave the world premiere of Brass Revolution at Birmingham Town Hall on 4th July 2018 as part of the Music for Youth National Festival.
A commission from composer/saxophonist Andy Scott, Brass Revolution is an explosion of sound and colour with young brass players improvising their way onto the stage, before embarking on a journey that pays homage both to the brass band tradition and jazz, rock and funk grooves associated with the 1960’s and beyond!
Brass Revolution celebrates youth and music, with an attitude (via narration, singing & playing) and message that ‘we (the younger generation) will be heard’. Funky grooves merge with slow melodies, hard-hitting horn lines are juxtaposed with delicate smaller ensemble work.
Scored for youth brass band, with additional ‘wider opportunities parts’ and ‘easy parts’ Brass Revolution is an 18-minute continuous work.

Defiance

A single movement work, Defiance is inspired by and dedicated to the spirit of the people of Manchester U.K.
Defiance opens with a chorale-like statement that moves through several key centres, with a spiritual centre of strength. The top brass bands possess an ensemble sound, dynamic range and emotion second to none, and this sets the tone for the piece, with solo horn and flugelhorn leading the way. Fairey Band, who commissioned Defiance, was formed in 1937 and the music that follows is influenced by the music of this era. A ‘jungle’ swing feel sets the tone for ensemble and soloistic challenges. The bass trombone and bass section locking in with drums and tom toms, over which solos follow for euphonium and horn. However the main emphasis is on the full ensemble, exploring colours and textures whilst all the time challenging the players to swing! Out of the 1930’s groove emerges an Eb bass unaccompanied cadenza, which explores different emotions in a lyrical setting, followed by a virtuosic flugel horn cadenza that leads us into a bridge section that is a variation of the opening theme. There are optional solo cadenzas that are written for euphonium and solo cornet, giving bands a choice of which players to feature.
The second half of Defiance brings us to the present day. Insistent rhythms and riffs represent both the industrial heritage of Manchester and regeneration of the city, with a ‘four on the floor’ kit bass drum tipping it’s hat to ‘Madchester’ of the 1980’s. A short edgy and angular ensemble section that features a number of time changes returns as a solo cornet and solo trombone duo, almost fugue-like, with solo euphonium and flugelhorn augmenting the duo to a quartet. The band then moves into the ‘remembrance’ section of Defiance. ‘We will not be beaten’ is the clear message, carried by the tone, emotion and power of the full band. The short coda of Defiance sends out a message of positivity, drawing on elements heard in the second half of the piece.
Defiance was commissioned by Fairey Band with support from Brass Band England and funding from the PRS Foundation. The World Premiere of Defiance was given by Fairey Band conducted by Garry Cutt at the European Brass Band Championships, Utrecht, Holland on 5th May 2018.

Hymn to Barossa

duration 2:30
LINK TO PURCHASE HERE
Scored for brass band (without percussion), 'Hymn to Barossa' is a re-scoring by the composer of the hymn section from 'Battle of Barossa'. This piece was commissioned and funded by Foden's Brass Band & Armagh Old Boys' Band, premiered at the RNCM Festival of Brass 2010, and recorded on the CD 'A World Within' (SP&S DOYCD276).
This new arrangement is a melancholy and melodic hymn that mid-piece features a poignant cornet solo. 'Hymn to Barossa' gradually builds, but deliberately only so far, and is a statement of controlled emotions. Andy writes "It seemed fitting to arrange the Hymn for Brass Band as we approach the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Barossa, which took place in early March 1811. It is out of respect for the men and women that give their lives to protect our country, and as the poet Byron said "Bear witness, bright Barossa, thou cast tell, whose were the sons that bravely fought and fell"."
'Hymn to Barossa' was premiered by Foden's Band, conducted by John Wallace, at Brass in Concert, November 2010, at the Sage, Gateshead.

'Salt of the Earth Gospel' is a new version of the second movement of the Concerto for Tuba 'Salt of the Earth', that features Solo Euphonium. The original Tuba Concerto was written for Les Neish, and premiered by Les & Foden's Band in January 2008 at the RNCM Festival of Brass, and was subsequently recorded on the award winning CD 'Salt of the Earth' (Les Neish/Foden's Band/Mike Fowles) and on the CD 'Double Trouble'.
Glyn Williams approached the composer regarding a stand alone Euphonium feature of the second movement. This was completed by Andy Scott in early 2011 & recorded by Glyn on his CD 'The Lure of the Red Jacket' (which also features Scott compositions 'My Mountain Top' & 'Concerto for Euphonium & Bass Band'), and which later in the year was awarded 'Solo CD of the Year 2011, Brass Band World'. All recorded versions of 'Salt of the Earth' are available to purchase from www.worldofbrass.com. 'Salt of the Earth Gospel' is a seven-bar melody that is passed around different soloists whilst the solo euphonium weaves in and out of the melody in an almost improvisatory way. Tension is created by a gradual dynamic build with an ensemble release before the soloist gently brings the piece to rest.

The title track from Foden's Brass Band winning performance at Brass in Concert 2009. Commissioned by Foden's Band and recorded on the CD 'A World Within' (SP&S DOYCD 276). The piece commences with a fanfare-like passage with shifting time signatures, before settling into a funk-inspired groove, led by the bass section, bass trombone and percussion. An intricate ensemble section, either side of a tongue-in-cheek 'B' section (where Space Invader images and firing sounds were projected behind Foden's at Brass in Concert) all lead to a powerful and tight finish.
Space Invaders is an arcade video game designed by Tomohiro Nishikado. Following its release in 1978, the game caused a temporary shortage of 100-yen coins in Japan, and the Guinness World Records ranks it the top arcade game.
