Written for and premiered by the Royal Northern College of Music Saxophone Orchestra, at the 2002 CASS Conference, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Cardiff, UK. Recorded by the National Saxophone Choir on the CD Sax to the Max in 2007. Recorded by Yorkshire Saxophone Choir on the CD Sax for Twelve in 2009.
The intention of this piece is two-fold; to explore the homogeneity of the saxophone family, building in waves from an opening solo alto saxophone statement, to a massed saxophone climax heralded by the introduction of the sopranino saxophone, and secondly, to allow the saxophones to breathe and sing, without having to worry about lots of notes! The piece ends calmly, defragmenting the opening statement before coming to rest.
(Sn,S,S,A,A,A,T,T,T,B,B,Bs) There are two alternative parts: soprano saxophone part replacing the sopranino sax part, and an alternate baritone part replacing the bass saxophone part.

Andy approached his great friend Jim Fieldhouse to arrange Big Red for Brass Band, specifically for the Foden's Band recording 'A World Within' (SP&S DOYCD276), released in September 2010.
"Jim has captured the spirit and shape of Big Red perfectly, a great arrangement that utilises both the power and subtlety of a Brass Band" Andy Scott

"My friend Mark White approached me, asking if he could arrange Big Red for Saxophone Quartet with backing track. Mark is a fantastic musician and member of the Veya Saxophone Quartet, of course I agreed! Mark's arrangement is beautifully crafted, hear for yourself on the VSQ CD 'On a Lighter Note' (2008)."
