A six-minute two movement work that was commissioned by the Tempest Flute Trio, and premiered by Tempest at the Wigmore Hall, London, UK on 3rd March 2014, as part of the Park Lane Young Artist Concert Series. Dedicated to the late and great saxophonist and flutist, and innovative musician Yusef Lateef (1920-2013).
The Golden Flute is the title of a Yusef Lateef album that was recorded at Rudy Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey on June 15th (by coincidence the birth date of Andy Scott) & June 16th 1966. Here, Andy Scott has taken the harmonic centre of the plaintive flute outro of the album title track, and created a sound world that features alto flute, flanked by two piccolos which explores tension and release via dynamics, strict tempo and rubato, weaving phrases and extended techniques.
The Golden Horn is an inlet of the Bosphorus, dividing the city of Istanbul and forming the natural harbour that has sheltered Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and other ships for thousands of years. Its title and high energy Turkish dance-like feel contrast musically with the Golden Flute, creating a challenging yet accessible new work for flute trio.
