Now & Then
orchestration  saxophone quartet
duration  12:00
Now and Then is scored for the standard saxophone quartet line-up of soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxes. It is based around two intervals of a fifth, and has three main sections that run together. The first section opens with rhythmic block chord writing before moving into a groove over which solos and duets develop. This resolves onto a unison note, which becomes a pivot note around which different chords are voiced. A soprano saxophone cadenza, baritone and soprano duet and final quartet passage complete section two. The third and final section brings together fragments from the previous two sections in a funkier sound world.
Now and Then was commissioned, premiered (at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester in April 2001) and recorded on their CD - 'Hot Lipped' by the Kintamarni Saxophone Quartet and funded by North West Arts Board.

Andy Scott's "Now & Then" takes on a journey through a variety of moods and textures, from the acerbic neo-bop opening through a brooding Gil Evans-ish interlude via some virtuoso saxophone writing both angular and reflective.
