Written to accompany an old black & white film, this 4 movement work is a stylish pastiche on the film music of that era.
Commissioned by Phoenix Arts (Leicester, UK), for the Apollo Saxophone Quartet project "Journey across the Impossible", (music and Black & White film). Premiered by the ASQ in 1998 and recorded on its CD 'Words & Pictures'.
This arrangement takes four sections from the original score; 'Setting the Scene' musically reflects the age of the film "His Phantom Sweetheart", (nearly 100 years old!), 'Car Journey' features a legato soprano sax line over the bustle of the lower parts, 'Flirting' features a baritone sax introduction, whilst 'Murder' borders on energetic atonality whilst travelling between distinct musical landscapes.
His Phantom Sweetheart should be performed with minimal gaps between the movements.
