He works to commission, and is increasingly in demand to write for leading instrumentalists and ensembles on the world stage. Andy takes a collaborative approach to the development of a new piece, working closely with the performers and, in some cases, other creative artists to achieve a highly personal, tailored work. Self taught as a composer, Andy’s distinctive compositional voice speaks with a unique and effective mix of jazz, world music and contemporary classical elements.
Andy Scott received a British Composer Award in 2006 for his double saxophone concerto Dark Rain. In 2010 Crossing Waves, a work for solo harp, was premiered at Carnegie Hall NYC, Three Letter Word, commissioned by the Park Lane Group was premiered at the South Bank Centre London, Seven Dances and No Looking Back featured on the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet Chandos CD Dances, and his piece Jukebox was given a world premiere at the Southbank Centre by respected harpist Sioned Williams. Andy is composer in residence with Foden’s Band, whose first recording of his works A World Within won the British Bandsman CD of the Year in 2010. Having made an impression as a skilled writer for brass, the relationship with Foden’s has led to Andy’s works being featured on prizewinning recordings by Les Neish (tuba) and Glyn Williams (euphonium). Andy’s work Spirit of Mingus, commissioned by Foden’s, was shortlisted for a British Composer Award in 2012, and features on Spirit of Foden’s, a second CD of Andy Scott brass band works released in 2013.
Andy Scott was one of 20 composers selected for a prestigious New Music Biennial commission, composing a new work for Foden’s Band, harpist Lauren Scott, soprano/narrator Anna-Clare Monk and four narrators drawn from Foden’s Youth Band. Entitled A Child Like You, the composition received its world premiere performance at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester in May 2014. It also featured in special weekend festivals at London’s Southbank Centre and Glasgow UNESCO City of Music. A Child Like You was nominated for a BASCA British Composer Award in 2015.
The Bad Tempered Flute, an album of Andy’s compositions for flute, was released in 2011 on the Nimbus Alliance label, featuring Paul Edmund-Davies, Clare Southworth and Andy Findon, with Craig Ogden, Peter Lawson, Lauren Scott and Tim Carey.
In 2012 he was commissioned to write a Concerto for Tenor Saxophone and Chamber Orchestra, which was premiered at the World Saxophone Congress in St Andrews by Branford Marsalis and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Clark Rundell.
All his works are published exclusively by Astute Music, and as well as concert works, Andy has a number of compositions on the syllabi for ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall grade examinations.
Andy often has the opportunity to integrate composition and performance in his various ensembles. As Tenor Saxophonist and a founder member of the internationally acclaimed Apollo Saxophone Quartet, Andy composed several works specifically for the group. His Phantom Sweetheart, a four movement work written as part of the quartet’s black and white film project, features on their CD Words and Pictures. My Mountain Top, a moving, atmospheric composition incorporating a poem by Lemn Sissay, appears on the same recording and has subsequently been arranged for a variety of other instruments, proving to be one of Andy’s most popular works.
Andy also writes much of the material for his own large jazz ensemble SaxAssault, which has recorded three CDs and featured on BBC Radio 3 Jazz Notes. Andy and percussionist Dave Hassell have worked as an experimental Duo since 1996, performing internationally and releasing two albums. Andy is involved in many collaborative projects with other artists, most recently Caliente, a trio with flautist Clare Southworth and harpist Lauren Scott, for which he writes.
Recent commissions from Andy were premiered at the Purcell Room and Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall and Royal Albert Hall.
Future projects include a Guitar Concerto for Craig Ogden and a Trumpet Concerto for Rex Richardson.

Composer Press Quotes
"HERE'S an album to demolish the distinction between 'local' players and `world-class' players. As an example of elaborate arrangements, tuneful melodies and big band dynamics, Sax Of Gold (SaxAssault CD) bears comparison with anything being produced by the more vaunted Stateside jazz fraternity… What raises Sax of Gold above the competition, however, is Scott's gift for melody.” Manchester Evening News
"There were glorious moments, as when Branford Marsalis’s tenor sax floated in over a dramatic orchestral introduction to Andy Scott’s Laissez les Bon Temps Rouler, and in some hauntingly beautiful exchanges with harpist Philippa Tunnell." Jim Gilchrist – The Scotsman (World premiere of "Laissez les bons temps rouler!" at the World Saxophone Congress in St Andrews, with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and conductor Clark Rundell.)
“...a hugely talented composer using his artistry to communicate fresh ideas through a traditional sound. The language is richly tonal, yet never predictable, always leading the listener with haunting melodic lines, extraordinary ensemble work of great rhythmic drive and an expressive centre which feels completely organic territory for brass bands.” Bramwell Tovey – Introduction to A World Within
"Andy Scott's Sonata for flute and harp might just be a hit in the making. Fuelled by concise and skilfully developed rhythmic themes in the outer movements and a wonderfully elegiac melody in the second, this was one of those rare moments when a significant new work strikes gold with both the performers and the audience" Classical Guitar Magazine
“Craig Ogden and Gerard McChrystal set the thermometer high with their sinuous and heady interpretation of Andy Scott's Nemesis.” The Irish Times
"A Child Like You is a composition that is hard to categorize - at times showing elements of Kurt Weill’s theatre works, sometimes reminiscent of Honneger’s Jeanne d’Arc au Bucher. It is however an immensely powerful, emotive and very relevant work that reflects attitudes and circumstances of this or any other era.” Peter Bale – 4barsrest.com (London premiere of A Child Like You by Foden's Band, Anna-Clare Monk and Lauren Scott conducted by Michael Fowles at Southbank Centre)
"The march Standard of St George was an obvious candidate for inclusion on such an occasion; less so was Andy Scott’s Fujiko, in a first performance in a new arrangement for flute, with Lance Sergeant Rachel Smith as the impressive soloist. With its Japanese influences and unfamiliar sounds, it made for one of the highlights of the evening." Peter Bale – 4barsrest.com (Fujiko by Rachel Smith and the Band of the Coldstream Guards at St George's Day concert at Cadogan Hall)
"The band launched into four pieces from the composer- in residence, Andy Scott. The combination has just launched a new CD entitled 'Spirit of Foden’s', and after these riveting performances, it was no surprise that at the end of the first half, the audience headed for the CD stands...” Malcolm Wood – 4barsrest.com (Foden’s Band at 2013 Great Northern Brass Arts Festival Gala Concert)
"The flamenco inspired, 'Big' was two and half minutes of invigorating colour... the engrossing, 'Soul and Feel' from 'Molecular Cocktail Party' was the golden moment of the entire day. Principal trombonist and pianist John Barber set about his improvisational showcase with a relaxed aplomb – allowing the emerging musical lines to appear as if by fusion. It is a work that reveals more about itself on each hearing...” Malcolm Wood – 4barsrest.com (Foden’s Band at 2013 Great Northern Brass Arts Festival Gala Concert)
“The two really interesting tracks ... are the lovely arrangement of John Ireland’s ‘Love Unknown’ by Steve Robson and Andy Scott’s superbly crafted, ‘To the Ancient Crosses’, both of which are well worth any band paying a few bob to get their hands on to add to their own concert cruet sets. As with this release, both of them will certainly impress the in-laws.” Iwan Fox – 4barsrest.com (Patron’s Choice V CD)
“Scott’s music is light-footed, jazzy, sensual, sentimental, funny and sometimes very virtuoso.” Wieke Karsten – Fluit Magazine, 2012, translated by Mia Dreese (The Bad Tempered Flute CD)

“Andy Scott's Sonata for Flute & Harp... will become, I believe, a major work in our repertoire….his writing is both vibrant and refreshing.” British Flute Society
"The Sonata for flute and harp by Andy Scott, a piece I particularly enjoyed, came next. The evocative first movement was played with a beautiful sense of line and ensemble; this was followed by an emotional and captivating slow movement before building into a frenzy of rustic Eastern European excitement in the finale. Written in 2003 this piece is a welcome addition to the flute and harp repertoire." PAN, The Journal of the British Flute Society

Brass Band
In 2008 Andy Scott exploded on to the brass band scene, making an instant impact with his powerful and moving compositions. First was Salt of the Earth, a three movement concerto for solo tuba and brass band, written for and commissioned by virtuoso tubist Les Neish, with Foden’s Band and premiered at the prestigious RNCM Festival of Brass.
Such was the response to this piece that Foden’s Band approached Andy to become its inaugural Composer in Residence (Foden’s Band was formed just over 100 years ago), a great honour. The following years have seen Andy and Foden’s develop a great working relationship that has produced commissioned works, award-winning recordings and a mutual sense of musical trust and respect. As Foden’s principal guest conductor (and Principal Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra) Bramwell Tovey commented “The combination of Foden’s and the creative sound world of Andy Scott is simply irresistible”.
Highlights of the Foden’s/Scott collaboration include; the CD A World Within – the music of Andy Scott, which was awarded British Bandsman CD of the Year 2010, principal euphonium Glyn Williams’ CD The Lure of the Red Jacket (named after Andy’s Concerto written for Glyn), which was awarded Brass Band World Solo CD of the Year 2011, Space Invaders (the title piece of Foden’s award winning Brass in Concert programme in 2009), Les Neish’s CD Salt of the Earth, which was awarded British Bandsman, Brass Band World and 4BR Solo CDs of the Year 2009, and the CD Double Trouble a collaborative CD with Les Neish and James Gourlay tubas, Tubalate and Foden’s Band, and composers Barbara Thompson MBE and Andy Scott, which was awarded 2nd place in the Brass Band World Solo CD of the Year 2010.
A second CD of works by Andy Scott was released by Foden's in September 2013. Entitled Spirit of Foden’s, the recording features new works commissioned by Foden’s from Andy in his role as inaugural Composer in Residence, and a very special roster of guests - Bramwell Tovey, Allan Withington, Rex Richardson, Martin Winter and John Wallace.
Andy Scott composed a New Music Biennial commission for Foden's Band with harpist Lauren Scott, soprano Anna-Clare Monk & four members of Foden's Youth Band who narrate, entitled A Child Like You, which was premiered at the RNCM, and performed at the Southbank Centre, London and Glasgow UNESCO City of Music in 2014, broadcast on BBC Radio 3 & released on the NMC recording label.
Foden’s Band has a strong association with the Lions Youth Brass Band organisation, who are also Sandbach based. Andy composed ‘Roar’ and ‘Entrudo’ for the LYBB, who have recently recorded 'Hymn to Barossa' and 'Roar' for their CD 'Conquest'. Andy also offered to compose a short piece for the winner of the inaugural Foden’s Solo Competition 2011. The result is ‘Let There Be Peace’, which is scored for euphonium and piano, was given a world premiere by Aaron Rivkin in Linz, Austria as part of ITEC 2012, and subsequently recorded by Glyn Williams & Bramwell Tovey.
Further afield, Andy collaborated with Stavanger Brass Band in Norway on a programme devised by its principal conductor Allan Withington that features newly commissioned and previous works from Andy. The programme itself was awarded 2nd place at Siddis 2011. The Brass Explosion Festival 2010 in Singapore featured the world premiere of a new work from Andy, performed by Desford Band.
Closer to home, Bramwell Tovey has programmed and conducted A World Within & Salt of the Earth (with Les Neish) with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, whilst Richard Evans has conducted the same pieces with the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland. Andy's works have also been programmed by the Royal Northern College of Music Junior School, directed by Les Neish. Grimethorpe Band recently commissioned Andy to write a new work that was given a world premiere at The Sage, Gateshead as part of its Brass in Concert 2015 programme.
Since 2008 Andy has had commissioned works given a world premiere at the annual RNCM Festival of Brass; Salt of the Earth (2008), A World Within (2009), Battle of Barossa (2010) a co-commission with Ivor Stephenson and the Armagh Silver Band and Foden’s Band, The Lure of the Red Jacket (2011), Spirit of Mingus (2012) & Molecular Cocktail Party (2013), with a performance of A Child Like You (2016).
A number of Andy’s compositions have also been arranged for brass band by his great friend Jim Fieldhouse, with premieres of these works being given by Foden’s Band and the Cornwall Youth Brass Band.
In 2012 Spirit of Mingus was nominated for a prestigious BASCA British Composer Award, as was A Child Like You in 2015, an award which Andy won (Wind & Brass Category) in 2006.
