Tenor Saxophone Project
Andy rehearsing Concerto for Stan Getz by Richard Rodney Bennett for the composer's 70th Birthday Concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, with the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by John Wilson. Chester/Novello are due to publish a new Tenor Saxophone & Piano version of this concerto, edited by Andy & Peter Lawson.
Andy Scott is committed to performing, recording, commissioning and composing new music for Tenor Saxophone. This page is intended to be a resource for fellow Tenor Saxophonists who may be researching new repertoire. Andy Scott’s contribution to the increasing repertoire for Tenor Saxophone is two-fold; by encouraging composers to write for the instrument & recording commissions and performances, whilst also adding to the repertoire via his compositions. It isn’t really a mission as such, rather something that has evolved since 1985 when Andy became a founding member of the Apollo Saxophone Quartet, holding the Tenor Saxophone chair to this day. It is a belief of Andys that it is important to document new repertoire via recordings, giving saxophonists an opportunity to ‘check out’ new repertoire, whilst hopefully appealing to a wider musical audience.
The CD entitled My Mountain Top was released in 2006 and features World Premiere recordings of works for Tenor Saxophone from Richard Rodney Bennett, Graham Fitkin, Pete Meechan, Matt Wright, Paul Mitchell-Davidson, Dave Heath and Andy Scott. The Fitkin piece ‘Passing’ was commissioned by the World Tenor Saxophone Consortium (twelve saxophonists that Andy met on his Apollo travels & who agreed when approached to contribute equally to the composers commission fee, and give simultaneous World Premieres worldwide in April 2005).
Plans are underway to record a second CD of world premieres of new works for Tenor Saxophone. In addition, Andy is devising a tenor saxophone strand to be an integral part of the 16th World Saxophone Congress at St Andrews, Scotland in July 2012.
