Apitos ‘Made in Manchester’ at MJF
Dave Hassell’s group Apitos performed the closing concert at the 2008 Manchester Jazz Festival. I’ve been playing with Apitos since the mid-1990’s & it’s a privilege to work with these musicians and to have an opportunity to play this style of music. Dave has a new project with the band, called ‘Made in Manchester’ – new arrangements of pop hits by Manchester bands such as 10cc, Oasis, Happy Mondays…. Written and performed in a ‘Latin/Jazz’ idiom. Along with Mike Hamnett & Nick Smart, I took on the challenge of arranging a few charts – the Oasis tune ‘The Importance of Being Idle’ ended up as a fast and furious ‘Frevo’! It was great seeing and working with Paul Clarvis again, one of the many fine musicians in Apitos. Big thanks to Steve & Mick at Manchester Jazz Festival for another amazing week of gigs!!
