May 2007
Hello and thanks for visiting this page. It's a very exciting and busy time at the moment so this newsletter is a bit of list this time round. However, most importantly...... A big thank you for all the support at recent gigs! I appreciate your emails and comments, keep them coming and don't forget to become a friend on the SaxAssault myspace. Best wishes, Andy
Premieres – Mike Hall commissioned me to write a short work for Tenor Saxophone with String Orchestra. As yet unnamed, Mike includes this work in a gig featuring his group ‘Crystal’ and the Strings of the Royal Northern College of Music, on Tuesday 1st May, 7:30pm. www.rncm.ac.uk. Bluejuice premieres two new arrangements of mine, ‘Lip Service’ & ‘Don’t Shoot the Duck’ at the Garrick Theatre, Altrincham on Sunday 29th April, 7:45pm. www.bluejuice.uk.com Last week Sandbach School Saxophones premiered a new arrangement of ‘Two Fat Ladies’. Joining them on-stage was SaxAssault alto saxophonist Simon Willescroft. Simon & I start co-writing his debut CD in the next few months! SaxAssault – the UK Tour in March and CD launch were fantastic and a great time was had by all. Bob Mintzer joined us as guest at the Life Café in Manchester, plus Claire Martin played ‘Lip Service’ on her BBC Radio 3 Jazz programme. There were numerous reviews and interviews all of which will be available on the SaxAssault web site soon. The ‘Sax of Gold’ CD is now available from iTunes and you can buy copies from either www.saxassault.com or www.jazzcds.co.uk . Please support the band and buy a CD! SaxAssault Remixes – I’ve been collaborating with Mark White & Matt Dunn, who are working on a SaxAssault Remix EP to be released in Autumn 2007. I'll post some soundclips up on the SaxAssault MySpace as soon as we have them. Meanwhile take a look at Mark’s web site www.markwhitemedia.com Recordings – I’ve just had news that a deal has been secured to record a DVD in August of my multi-arts project ‘Summer with Monica’. The National Saxophone Choir of Great Britain has released a CD entitled ‘Sax to the Max’ which includes my piece ‘Big Red’. Please visit www.saxchoir.com Features/Articles – Selmer Paris approached me about including an article in their ‘Selmer Frequence’ magazine (which is distributed worldwide). The focus is on my two sax concerto ‘Dark Rain’ and SaxAssault. It is an honour to be included in this publication, especially as this issue is a tribute to the late and great tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker. A free download is available at www.selmer.fr Last Tuesday I met up with John Robert Brown who has been commissioned by Cass to write an article about me for its Summer Magazine Issue. We met at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester and tried to find a quiet corner for interview, pretty difficult as the AC Milan football team were staying there ahead of their match that night with Manchester United! www.clarinetandsaxophone.co.uk Harrogate Saxophone Summer School – this is the only Saxophone Summer School that I direct. We had thirty saxophonists on the course in 2006, and all had a great time! Please come and join us this year, the course runs Sunday 19th – Thursday 23rd August.
