Apollo Saxophone Orchestra release first CD
Wed 25 Jul 2012
The Apollo Saxophone Orchestra launched its inaugural CD on Nimbus Alliance with a performance at the World Saxophone Congress in St Andrews on 12 July 2012. The CD, entitled Perpetual Motion (NI6200), features Barbara Thompson’s works for large saxophone ensemble, including the title track.
The composer was present for the late night Congress performance at the Byre Theatre, which also included the screening of a specially edited version of the recent BBC documentary about Barbara, her music and life with Parkinson’s. The combination of Barbara’s moving story and the emotional power of the music in tracks such as Dear Bach... created a very special event, which received an outstanding reaction from the capacity audience.
The Apollo Saxophone Orchestra was formed by the Apollo Saxophone Quartet at the beginning of the year and recorded the CD at the Royal Northern College of Music in January 2012, produced by Barbara’s husband, the drummer Jon Hiseman. The musicians are drawn from London, Scotland and Berlin as well as the North of England.
The Apollo Saxophone Orchestra are Rob Buckland, Meriel Price, Sally McTaggart, Carl Raven, Fiona Asbury, Ruth Bourne, Jim Fieldhouse, Michael Brogan, Huw Wiggin, Neil Crossley, Chrisoph Enzel and Andy Scott.
