Manchester Jazz Festival 2009

Congratulations once again to the Manchester Jazz Festival team, headed by Steve Mead & Mick Waterfield for presenting a wonderful week of music in the North West!

I went to see future, current and past saxophone students that I teach at the RNCM all playing on the same triple bill gig, as the Opening Night of MJF 2009; Rob Cope, Sam Andreae, Sam Healey and Kenji Fenton. The great thing is that they're all developing their own voices (i.e. they don't all sound the same!). Fantastic playing and good writing and arranging.

This year at MJF I was involved with the George King Quintet. A great line up of; George (piano), Carl Raven & myself (saxes), Jon Thorne (bass) & Jonas Backman. The compositions are all by George, mixing spacious and meditative with gutsy and direct tunes. The acoustics of the Bridgewater Hall Foyer suited the band and there was a great turn out. Watch out for tour dates and a recording from the GKQ in 2010.
