Concerto for Euphonium & Brass Band

Andy has finished writing a new commission for Foden's Brass Band principal euphonium Glyn Williams.

The 13-minute Concerto for Euphonium will be premiered by Glyn & Foden's Band, conducted by Mike Fowles, at the RNCM Festival of Brass in Manchester on Saturday 29th January 2011.

Andy writes "Lure of the Red Jacket, the first movement, represents Glyn's ambition as a young player to join Foden's Band. A non-relenting riff represents the constant hard slog of practice, over which the solo part evolves. Far Beyond the Stars is the title of the second movement, using words written by a 16th Century Welsh poet, this movement is poignant and was a real challenge to write. The final movement is titled 'The Dragon's Den' (in keeping with Glyn's Welsh roots) and is a latin-fusion workout! In all three movements there are real technical & musical challenges for Glyn, whilst overall I feel that the scoring, voicing and ideas are hopefully a step on from previous works that I've written for Foden's. Rehearsals are underway & I'm looking forward to the World Premiere on Saturday 29th January. Thanks to Glyn & Foden's for giving me this opportunity to write, and setting up a fantastic World Premiere."
